The new canary in the mine is a 2014 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit exploring how mobile technologies are transforming the energy and natural-resources sector. It investigates the capacity of a new generation of portable devices to improve health and safety for miners—and simultaneously boost productivity and save costs. It also considers the challenges sector decision-makers face. While new technologies have enormous potential they also bring new risks, and change is a key contributing cause of serious injury and fatalities.
As the basis for this research, The Economist Intelligence Unit conducted in August 2013 a global survey of 150 energy and natural-resources executives, comprising 50 in each of the mining, utilities, and oil and gas industries.
